I actually like Alduin very much. But the biggest problem with him is that it's really difficult to take him seriously. He's so over the top, exaggerated, almost grotesque, and acting like he was constantly pissed off. I like it, actually, but not everyone has to.

Part of me would like him to be more mysterious and frightening but at the same time I just LOVE obnoxious villains.

I like to think (_{oh no, headcanons incoming}) his personality is kinda split in two - one, more calm, mysterious and dignified (that's why the idea of him having an ability to choose a human form fits him perfectly, in my opinion), and another one, the one we all know c:
I mean, we don't get too many "Alduin moments" in game, and all of them are just the "RROAAARRR I will kill you" moments. But when we're talking with Paarthurnax, he says a lot about Alduin, mostly how wise, foreseeing and gifted, but also arrogant he was.
